Porn for book lovers

Thanks to MobyLives, I’ve discovered that the Mirage Bookmark website has a collection of stunning photos of the “Most Interesting Bookstores of the World” and the “Most Interesting Libraries of the World.”

Are you sure you can handle it? Here’s a taste…

The Lello Bookstore in Porto, Portugal:

Bookstore El Atenio in Buenos Aires:

The Library of the Royal Site of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, Spain:

Had enough? No? How about a photo from Wired magazine of Jay Walker’s personal library:

I feel faint…

Update: You can find many more sexy photos of libraries on the Curious Expeditions blog in a post from September 2007 titled “Librophiliac Love Letter: A Compendium of Beautiful Libraries.” Be sure to check out the rest of this amazing site.

  1. That certainly kicked off a few tears! Oh my, do people not realize the emotional power of books? Even before you open them.

  3. I remember that Wired article about Walker’s library, and that, more than anything else, made me want to be a billionaire. I mean… a Sputnik prototype? …passes out…

Are you familiar with Make Magazine? The most recent issue had a little writeup on the lost art of the Wunderkammer, and I believe they referenced Walker’s library in that. His room starts to transcend what I consider a “library” and goes back to the Wunderkammer idea. Goooooood lord, that is intense.

I’m suddenly feeling rather inadequate ;)

  4. Such amazing shots. I’m utterly flabbergasted that little ol’ Vancouver would have its public library featured alongside the City Library of Stockholm.

The sheen comes off when you realize it was the main setting for Ahnold’s “Sixth Day”.

  5. utterly gorgeous photos – and great linkage! thank you for sharing gorgeous ‘book houses’ to lust and die for ~

  8. those bookstores are truly amazing. it’s the combination of elegance and organization of books. maybe you can find the “hard-to-find” books stuff.
